ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — A 53-year-old man was acquitted of rape and assault charges in the St Catherine Circuit Court on Monday after a jury unanimously found him not guilty.
The trial began on September 21, with the man facing two counts of rape, two counts of forcible abduction and three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.
The Crown set aside the forcible abduction charges, leaving the rape and assault counts for the jury to consider.
The six-member jury, comprising four women and two men, deliberated for nearly two hours before returning its verdict. Presiding judge Justice Yvonne Brown then told the man he was free to go.
Prosecutors had alleged that the man sexually assaulted the complainant using force and physically assaulted her on three occasions between October 2018 and December 2020.
A report to the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse led to his arrest and subsequent charges.
The complainant expressed disbelief at the verdict.
Attorneys Jon Paul Hamilton and Earl Hamilton represented the man.
