Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says the Government remains optimistic that discussions with Cuba could lead to a reconsideration of the medical cooperation programme between the two countries.
Speaking on the matter, Dr. Holness noted that while Jamaica recently ended its participation in the initiative, there is still hope that revised terms could allow for future engagement.
The administration announced on March 5 that it had discontinued the programme, citing unresolved differences with the Cuban government regarding its operational conditions. The decision marked a significant shift in a long-standing arrangement that facilitated the placement of Cuban medical professionals in Jamaica.
In response, Cuba’s Embassy in Kingston criticised the move, suggesting that external influence played a role in the decision to terminate the agreement.
Despite the disagreement, Dr. Holness reaffirmed Jamaica’s willingness to support Cuba and maintain constructive relations within the Caribbean region.
He emphasised that the Government remains open to dialogue, expressing confidence that a mutually acceptable framework could still be explored.
