Plans to transform Black River in St. Elizabeth are progressing, with lands now secured to relocate residents ahead of the development of a modern town centre, Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has announced.
The disclosure came during his contribution to the 2026/2027 Budget Debate on Thursday, where he outlined the Government’s next steps in rebuilding efforts following widespread damage caused by Hurricane Melissa.
The parish of St. Elizabeth sustained significant impact to its road network and key infrastructure during the storm. In response, authorities committed to reconstructing Black River with improved resilience to withstand future climate-related events.
Dr. Holness indicated that the relocation process will involve direct engagement with affected residents. He noted that consultations are expected to begin soon, allowing community members to participate in discussions surrounding the transition.
The redevelopment initiative forms part of broader recovery and resilience measures aimed at strengthening infrastructure and safeguarding communities against similar disasters.
