New Haven, St Andrew – A man police say was a known member of the Beng Gang was shot and killed on Saturday after allegedly confronting law enforcement officers with a sub-machine gun.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Kurt Thompson of Buckhan Avenue, Kingston.
According to police reports, Thompson was seen walking with a firearm in hand while officers were conducting a curfew patrol in the New Haven community. When the police identified themselves, Thompson allegedly pointed the weapon at them before attempting to flee. Officers pursued him to a premises on Bolivar View, where a confrontation ensued, resulting in his fatal shooting.
Authorities recovered an Intratec sub-machine gun from the scene.
Police records indicate that Thompson had a history of criminal activity. He was previously arrested and charged for illegal possession of a firearm but was released from prison in 2017. Later that same year, he was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon but was again released. The police statement did not specify whether he had been convicted of any charges.
