KINGSTON, Jamaica — Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says authorities are examining alternative measures to minimize service disruptions that could arise from the possible departure of Cuban medical personnel.
The minister addressed the issue during a media briefing on Monday, responding to public concerns surrounding the end of the long-standing Cuban Medical Programme.
Over the weekend, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade outlined the circumstances that led to Jamaica and Cuba being unable to finalize a new agreement to continue the arrangement. The disclosure followed criticism suggesting the current administration has distanced itself from long-standing cooperation with the Cuban government.
Since the programme’s termination, officials in Havana have reportedly instructed their healthcare workers to make arrangements to return home. The development has prompted questions about how the local health system could be affected.
Dr. Tufton indicated that redeploying existing personnel is among the options being considered to help maintain healthcare services.
