WASHINGTON — Jamaican nationals have been identified among a group of criminal undocumented migrants recently taken into custody by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
DHS officials said those detained are considered among the most dangerous offenders, with criminal histories that include child sexual assault, violent attacks and human trafficking. The arrests form part of ongoing enforcement operations targeting undocumented migrants with serious criminal convictions.
Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said the latest actions have resulted in the removal of individuals she described as posing significant threats to public safety. She noted that those detained include offenders convicted of crimes ranging from aggravated assault to homicide-related offences.
Among the Jamaicans arrested were Duane Alando Spence, who was convicted of aggravated battery causing serious bodily harm in Miami, Florida, and Marvin McGregor, who has convictions in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, including third-degree murder, illegal firearm possession and reckless endangerment.
ICE also detained several non-Jamaican Caribbean and regional nationals during the same operations. They include Barbadian national Brett Archer, convicted of assault in Brooklyn, New York; Dominican Republic nationals Randolfo Agusto Diaz-Cabrera, convicted of second-degree sexual conduct against a child in Kings County, New York, and Desiderio Marte Vargas, convicted of attempted murder and unlawful weapon possession in Paterson, New Jersey. Cuban nationals Duniesky Eugenio Delgado-Gazo and Yusney Figueroa Arguelles were also arrested, with convictions for aggravated assault in Florida and armed robbery in Orlando, respectively.
McLaughlin said the enforcement push is being carried out under the current U.S. administration, with ICE focusing resources on locating and removing undocumented migrants with criminal records. She added that approximately 70 per cent of recent ICE arrests involve individuals who have either been charged with or convicted of crimes in the United States.
