KINGSTON, Jamaica — Law enforcement authorities are urging citizens to act responsibly when reporting crimes, following an investigation that revealed a supposed kidnapping was, in fact, a domestic dispute.
The caution comes after a March 16 report triggered a high-level response from the police. At approximately 9:00 pm, officers at the Red Hills Police Station received information about the alleged abduction of a 25-year-old man, initially believed to be an Antiguan national. Reports indicated that the man’s brother, who lives in Antigua, had contacted authorities after receiving ransom demands from individuals claiming to have the victim in captivity.
Acting on the report, the man’s mother reportedly transferred money to a person in Jamaica. The matter was escalated to the Specialised Investigation Branch (SIB), which launched a probe and carried out an operation at a residence on Arthur Leon Drive in Golden Spring, St Andrew.
However, upon reaching the location, investigators discovered the man safe and in the company of his girlfriend. There were no signs of abduction or restraint. The individual later clarified that the situation stemmed from a misunderstanding linked to a personal dispute. He also confirmed that while he resides in Antigua, he is Jamaican and had recently travelled to the island to visit his partner.
Superintendent Oral Henry of the SIB emphasized that false reports place unnecessary strain on law enforcement resources and can undermine legitimate cases.
He warned that individuals who deliberately mislead authorities risk facing legal consequences, noting that such actions divert attention from genuine emergencies and may compromise support for real victims.
