Jamaica’s Declan James’ impressive run at the PanAm Games Squash Qualifiers came to an end in the semifinal after he was defeated by Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas.
James had been in strong form throughout the tournament, winning all his matches before the semifinal.
After receiving a bye in the round of 64, James defeated Guyana’s Daniel Carl Ince in straight sets, 11-7, 11-1, 11-3, in 25 minutes and three seconds.
He then overcame Shahjahan Khan of the United States in a competitive round-of-16 encounter, winning 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7. The match lasted 55 minutes and 34 seconds, with the longest game taking 14 minutes and 59 seconds.
In the quarterfinal, James defeated Guatemala’s Josue Enriquez in straight sets, 12-10, 11-2, 11-6, in 39 minutes and 19 seconds. The opening game was particularly challenging, lasting 18 minutes and 10 seconds.
However, James was unable to overcome Cardenas in the semifinal, losing 11-8, 11-4, 1-3 in 38 minutes and 32 seconds.
Cardenas is ranked 12th in the world and second in the qualifier, while James is ranked 23rd in the world and third in the qualifier.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Tahjia Lumley won her opening round-of-64 match against Bermuda’s D’Vario Thompson, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4, before losing to Brazil’s Diego T. Gobbi in straight sets, 11-7, 11-4, 11-3.
Chris Binnie did not complete his opening round-of-64 match.
The PanAm Games Squash Qualifiers are being held in Asuncion, Paraguay, from August 15 to 19.
