MANCHESTER, Jamaica — Two men were fatally shot during a police operation in Mandeville on Monday morning, prompting an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
Police reports indicate that about 6:40 am, officers from the Area Three Headquarters and Manchester Police Division were responding to allegations that men travelling in a silver Toyota Axio had threatened someone with an illegal firearm.
The team reportedly spotted a car matching the description along Old Greenvale Road and attempted to intercept it.
According to the police account, an occupant or occupants fired at the officers, who took evasive action and returned fire, bringing the vehicle to a halt.
Both men sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Police say a Smith & Wesson MP rifle was recovered during a search of the vehicle.
INDECOM is investigating the circumstances of the fatal shooting.
