Trinidad Woman Dies in St. Mary Crash

A woman from Trinidad and Tobago died after the vehicle in which she was travelling crashed and plunged into the Wag Water River in St. Mary on Monday morning.

The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old Shirnell Maxine Ettienne.

According to the St. Mary Police, the incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. on August 3 along the Agualta Vale main road near the Wag Water Bridge.

Preliminary reports indicate that a Toyota Corolla Altis was travelling west when the driver lost control while negotiating a corner near the bridge. The vehicle reportedly crossed the roadway before plunging into the river.

Police said all the occupants managed to escape the vehicle. However, Ettienne reportedly lost her footing while attempting to get to safety and was swept away by the strong current.

Her body was later recovered by a resident and taken to the Annotto Bay Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The other occupants sustained injuries and were transported to hospital, where they received medical treatment.

The St. Mary Police are urging motorists to exercise caution, particularly when driving on roads with sharp bends or during wet and hazardous conditions. Drivers are also being reminded to obey speed limits, remain vigilant, and operate their vehicles responsibly to help protect all road users.

Investigations into the fatal incident are continuing.
