A one-year-old girl is in hospital after she was accidentally shot in the leg when her three-year-old brother allegedly gained access to their father’s service pistol in Siloah, St. Elizabeth, on Sunday.
Police sources said the incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. as a 31-year-old police constable and his family were returning home from a visit to a waterfall attraction in northern St. Elizabeth.
According to investigators, the constable, who is assigned to the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, stopped along a roadway and left his children, their mother and a 16-year-old inside the vehicle.
Police allege that the officer left his service pistol unattended inside the vehicle. The three-year-old reportedly gained access to the firearm, which discharged, striking the one-year-old girl in the leg.
The child was rushed to hospital, where she was admitted in stable condition.
The incident is under investigation by the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
