A boating incident off the coast of Negril, Westmoreland, claimed the life of a Canadian national on Tuesday afternoon after a vessel reportedly overturned in rough waters.
The deceased has been identified as 68-year-old Jean D’amour of Ontario, Canada. He was visiting Jamaica and staying at the RIU Club Hotel in Negril at the time of the incident.
Police reports indicate that around 1:30 p.m., the boat D’amour was travelling on, which also carried one other person, was struck by a strong wave. The impact caused the vessel to capsize, throwing both occupants into the sea.
One individual was rescued and brought safely to shore. D’amour, however, later drowned, according to the authorities.
Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. This includes assessing the condition of the vessel and sea conditions at the time of the accident. Further updates are expected as the probe continues.
