Three police officers were shot and injured, while a man was shot and killed during an alleged shootout in Mount Salem, Montego Bay, St James, early Wednesday morning.
The dead man has been identified as 29-year-old Romario ‘Jerry’ Brown, who police say was wanted in connection with murder and shooting incidents.
According to a police report, a team from the Area One Area Fugitive Apprehension Team was patrolling Crawford Street around 3:18 a.m. when the officers came under heavy gunfire.
The police say the team took evasive action and an exchange of gunfire followed.
Brown and the three police personnel were injured during the incident.
One of the policemen sustained gunshot wounds to his shoulders and both legs. Another suffered a graze to his right side.
The policewoman was shot in the chest, with the bullet reportedly lodging in her cellphone, which was in her police vest.
An illegal firearm was seized at the scene, according to the police.
The injured persons were taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital, where Brown was pronounced dead.
One of the injured policemen remains hospitalised, while the other two officers were treated and released.
Mount Salem has been under a Zone of Special Operations since September 1, 2017, as the authorities seek to tackle persistent criminal activity in the community.
