A 59-year-old healthcare worker from a Corporate Area hospital was sentenced to three months in prison at the St. Catherine Parish Court on Monday for failing to report the sexual abuse of her 14-year-old daughter by her husband.
The mother pleaded guilty to the charge in July and remained out on bail until her sentencing. Acting Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gayle stated that a custodial sentence was necessary given the gravity of the case, though the term was mitigated because the guilty plea saved the court time.
The abuse came to light after the teenager reported her ordeal to school officials, who then alerted the police. Investigators subsequently arrested and charged the mother following a formal interview.
Meanwhile, the case against the husband, who faces charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, remains pending in the St. Catherine Circuit Court.
