Three men who were charged in connection with a 2020 double murder and arson in Torrington Park, Kingston, have been acquitted after the prosecution said its sole eyewitness could not be located.
The men were freed in the Home Circuit Court on Thursday after the Crown conceded there was insufficient evidence to continue the case.
The deceased were identified as 30-year-old Clifton Grant, otherwise called “Lickle Man,” and 21-year-old Romario Raymond, otherwise called “Dada,” both of Torrington Park, Kingston.
Acquitted are labourers Malic Saunders, Paul Cort and Omar Brown, otherwise called “Warlord,” all of Torrington Park, Kingston 5. They had been charged with two counts of murder, arson and illegal possession of a firearm.
During the trial, the investigating officer informed the court that the prosecution’s sole eyewitness, who resides overseas, could not be located despite repeated attempts.
As a result, the Crown acknowledged that there was insufficient evidence to proceed, and Justice Chester Stamp formally acquitted the three men.
Attorneys Earl Hamilton, JonPaul Hamilton, Patrick Peterkin and Jonoi McDonald, who represented the accused, welcomed the prosecution’s decision to discontinue the matter.
The charges stemmed from an incident on April 17, 2020. Prosecutors had alleged that at about 2:30 a.m., the accused and other accomplices were seen by the eyewitness opening fire on the victims’ home before setting it ablaze.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene, and during cooling-down operations, the bodies of Grant and Raymond were discovered in a bathtub inside the house. Both men were later pronounced dead at the Kingston Public Hospital.
A subsequent police investigation led to the arrest and charging of Saunders, Cort and Brown. However, with the prosecution unable to secure its key witness, the case was ultimately discontinued, resulting in their acquittal.
