More than $66 million has been spent on education support in St James Central since 2016, according to Member of Parliament Heroy Clarke.
Speaking during the State of the Constituency Debate on October 27, Clarke said the programme provides examination fees, books, uniforms, tuition assistance and tertiary grants.
Students attending institutions including the University of the West Indies, University of Technology, Montego Bay Community College and Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College have benefited.
Clarke said funding has increased as demand has grown, stressing that financial hardship should not prevent students from sitting examinations.
He also reported that this year’s annual back-to-school treat and health fair served more than 2,000 children, including youngsters from neighbouring constituencies and parishes. Services included school supplies, medical checks, dental checks, eye tests and grooming
