HANOVER, Jamaica — The Hanover Municipal Corporation says it will cost almost $1 billion to repair damage caused by Hurricane Melissa, worsening an already strained financial situation.
The corporation needs $814.8 million to fix damaged infrastructure and properties across the parish. The storm struck on October 28 and severely impacted about 13 major revenue sources, including building fees, market fees, advertising fees, and burials.
Mayor Sheridan Samuels said support is being sought from the Ministry of Local Government, the CHASE Fund, the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), and possible international agencies.
The corporation has also been struggling with expenses since the public sector salary reclassification took effect in 2022.
With mounting costs and reduced income, Hanover’s recovery remains challenging as the parish works to return to normalcy.
