A St Catherine resident who admitted to setting his former girlfriend on fire while she was asleep has been sentenced to 12 years behind bars by the St Catherine Circuit Court.
Antwone “Bad Fowl” Grey of Central Village received the sentence on Friday from Justice Dale Palmer. The court ordered that two years be credited for time already spent in custody.
The victim, Alecia King, reacted to the ruling by saying the punishment was insufficient compared to the suffering she has endured since the attack. She stated that the trauma and physical pain she has faced over the past two years exceed what Grey will experience during his incarceration.
Court records show that the incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. on August 24, 2023, at a residence in Redwood District. Grey, who was 19 at the time, poured gasoline on King, then 17, and set her on fire while she slept.
After the attack, Grey escaped and remained on the run for several months. He was taken into custody in February 2024, one day after King returned to Jamaica from the United States, where she received treatment at the Shriners Burns Center in Florida through assistance from the Sanmerna Foundation. Her medical care lasted approximately six months and was described as life-saving.
The case first proceeded in the St Catherine Parish Court, where Grey appeared multiple times before the matter was elevated to the High Court. He later entered a guilty plea.
At the time she was injured, King was awaiting her Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate exam results. She has since passed six subjects and is currently pursuing nursing studies. Despite her progress, she indicated that further surgeries are still required and said she continues to face challenges but remains determined to continue her education with support from charitable organizations and medical providers.
