A St. Catherine farmer will spend the next 17 years behind bars following his sentencing in the St. Catherine Circuit Court on Friday. The conviction stems from the sexual assault of a teenage girl over a decade ago.
Justice Dale Palmer, who presided over the case, ordered that the 58-year-old convict must serve a minimum of 10 years before he becomes eligible for parole.
Details of the Incident
The court proceedings revealed that the assault took place on February 11, 2015. The perpetrator, who was a trusted neighbor and family friend at the time, used a ruse to lure the then 15-year-old victim to his residence. He reportedly told the girl he had something to “show” her to convince her to enter the house.
According to the prosecution, the teenager was physically unwell at the time of the attack. Once she was inside the home, the man used his superior strength to overpower her and commit the act of rape.
Investigation and Conviction
The victim immediately confided in her brother regarding the ordeal, leading to an official report being lodged with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
Following a comprehensive investigation by the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), which included the collection and analysis of DNA evidence, the accused was formally charged. The decade-long pursuit of justice concluded this week with the court’s definitive ruling.
