Man Killed, Another Injured in Brazen Airport Shooting at Piarco International

PIARCO, Trinidad and Tobago — A man was shot and killed and another wounded in a bold gun attack just outside the Arrivals exit at Piarco International Airport early Thursday morning, April 17, 2025. Authorities have since described the incident as a “well-planned and executed hit.”

The deceased has been identified as Akim Quashie, also known as “Sours,” of Nicholas Street, Maraval. According to police sources, Quashie was a prominent figure reportedly controlling areas including Coco Jah and other sections of Maraval.

The second man of Back Street, Le Platte Village in Maraval, was injured in the gunfire and remains hospitalized.

Initial reports indicate that the attack occurred shortly after 6:00 a.m., catching both passengers and airport staff off guard. Eyewitnesses described chaos at the scene, with travelers scrambling for cover as gunshots rang out near the terminal’s Arrivals area.

One eyewitness and social media personality who had just cleared customs recounted the confusion and lack of response from security personnel.

“That was the fastest I ever cleared customs. Passed through the side door and was told not to turn left… I saw him being attended to. I was very disappointed by the lack of security and police, no contingency plans in place. Very sad state. They looked confused and didn’t know what to do… no safety for passengers,” the witness told reporters.

Law enforcement sources say the gunmen were likely tracking Quashie and struck as he exited the terminal. The attackers fled the scene, and no arrests have been made as yet.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about security at the country’s main international airport, with many calling for an urgent review of safety protocols.

Investigations are ongoing, and police are reviewing surveillance footage to identify the assailants.
