LONDON, United Kingdom — A London jury found British comedian and actor Russell Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday, November 5. The four convictions involved four women.
The jury at Southwark Crown Court returned unanimous guilty verdicts after a four-week trial. It acquitted Brand, 51, of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. Brand had pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintained that his sexual encounters were consensual.
Judge Joel Bennathan refused bail and remanded Brand in custody ahead of sentencing on Monday, November 9. Defence lawyer Ian Winter had asked for Brand to remain free over the weekend so he could say goodbye to his three children. The judge said Brand faced a substantial prison sentence and cited concerns that he might fail to return to court.
After the verdicts, the Metropolitan Police praised the women who came forward. The force said detectives gathered evidence from more than 100 witnesses and reviewed thousands of documents during the investigation.
