KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has moved swiftly to fill the sudden vacancy at the helm of the national senior men’s team, announcing Rudolph Speid as the interim head coach of the Reggae Boyz, following the resignation of Englishman Steve McClaren earlier this week.
The announcement came Friday afternoon after what sources say was an emergency meeting at the JFF headquarters, where two candidates were interviewed for the post. Speid, one of the shortlisted contenders, got the nod and will officially take charge from December 15, 2025 to March 31, 2026.
The JFF also confirmed that discussions are currently underway with the agent of Miguel Coley, the former Reggae Boyz assistant coach who is now based in Iraq. Coley, understood to be the second candidate interviewed on Friday, is being considered for the assistant coach role.
Speid is no stranger to the national programme, having served as technical advisor for the Reggae Boyz over the last four months under McClaren. McClaren abruptly resigned on Tuesday following Jamaica’s disappointing 0–0 draw with Curaçao, a result that cost the team automatic qualification for the FIFA World Cup and triggered widespread backlash from fans and analysts.
A respected figure in local football, Speid is best known for transforming Cavalier FC into one of the island’s top clubs — capturing three Jamaica Premier League titles in the last four years and lifting the 2024 Concacaf Caribbean Cup.
His interim tenure will immediately throw him into high-stakes pressure, as he leads Jamaica into the Inter-Confederation Playoffs in March — the Boyz’ final shot at qualifying for next year’s World Cup. Jamaica will first face New Caledonia of Oceania in the semi-finals. A victory would earn them a spot in the decisive final against DR Congo, with the winner securing a coveted ticket to the global tournament.
With time short and expectations high, all eyes are now on Rudolph Speid as he steps into the hot seat to keep Jamaica’s World Cup dream alive.
