More than 100 residential lots are expected to become available in Hague and Clifton, Trelawny, to accommodate residents relocating from Cooper’s Pen.
Minister responsible for Land Titling and Settlements, Robert Montague, said the lots form part of an integrated development on government-owned land. He outlined the proposal during a site visit on October 20.
The Housing Agency of Jamaica will develop another section for commercial sale, an approach Montague said would help reduce infrastructure costs and the burden on taxpayers.
Trelawny Northern MP Tova Hamilton said residents can choose a relocation grant to secure accommodation elsewhere, or a residential lot with a partial grant.
Authorities hope to establish residents’ preferences by the end of the week, allowing those choosing Hague and Clifton to select lots.
However, Hamilton acknowledged that infrastructure will remain unfinished when the November 30 court-ordered relocation deadline arrives. Grants are intended to help residents through the transition.
Falmouth Mayor Colin Gager pledged the municipal corporation’s support and encouraged residents to cooperate, while acknowledging the difficulty of leaving their community.
