King Harald V Dies

Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89

Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s oldest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 89.

The Norwegian Royal Palace confirmed that Harald died at the National Hospital in Oslo on Friday morning.

His son has automatically succeeded him as king and will reign as King Haakon VIII.

Harald became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. He spent more than three decades on the Norwegian throne.

As a child, Harald and his family were forced into exile during the Nazi occupation of Norway in World War II.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the country was mourning the loss of the monarch and expressed gratitude for Harald’s “long life in the service of Norway.”

Harald’s death brings to an end more than 30 years of his reign.
