MANCHESTER, Jamaica — A confrontation between police and a man reportedly believed to be mentally unwell ended in a fatal shooting along Caledonia Road in Mandeville on Thursday afternoon, authorities have confirmed.
Investigators say the deceased has not yet been formally identified.
According to preliminary police reports, the incident unfolded shortly after 3:00 p.m. when the man allegedly began throwing stones at employees at a nearby furniture and appliance business. Law enforcement officers were summoned to the area in response to the disturbance.
Upon their arrival, the situation escalated when the man reportedly retreated into a house and barricaded himself. During the encounter that followed, he is said to have thrown a stone that struck a police officer in the head, causing the officer to fall.
Officers then discharged their weapons, hitting the man. He was later transported to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The injured policeman was also taken to hospital for treatment and was subsequently transferred to a private medical facility due to overcrowding at the public hospital. Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing.
