Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur.
The 63-year-old former gang leader received the sentence in a Las Vegas courtroom on Tuesday, October 13, following his conviction in August. Davis is the only person ever charged in connection with Shakur’s killing. (abcnews.com)
Prosecutors said Davis helped organise the drive-by shooting and supplied the firearm used in the attack. Although he was not accused of pulling the trigger, he was convicted for his role in the murder.
Authorities said the attack followed an altercation involving Shakur and Davis’ nephew earlier that evening at the MGM Grand casino. (reuters.com)
Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in a vehicle driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight. The rapper died six days later at the age of 25. (people.com)
Before sentencing, members of Shakur’s family delivered emotional statements describing the lasting impact of his death. His sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, urged the court to impose the maximum punishment. (abcnews.com)
The case remained unsolved for decades before Davis’ arrest in September 2023. His interviews and 2019 memoir became central to the prosecution’s case.
Davis’ defence argued that his accounts were exaggerated and has announced plans to appeal his conviction. (people.com)
