JTA Urges Emergency Water Funding for Schools

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) is calling for improved water deliveries and dedicated emergency funding for schools affected by drought.

Speaking in Montego Bay on Wednesday, JTA President La Sonja Harrison said administrators should be able to engage approved private suppliers when Government deliveries are delayed, without having to use scarce school funds and await reimbursement.

She stressed that water is essential for drinking, meal preparation, cleaning and infection prevention, particularly amid concerns about hand, foot and mouth disease.

Meanwhile, Water Minister Matthew Samuda announced emergency procurement of 5,000 water tanks, including 1,000 for early-childhood institutions.

Harrison also urged authorities to address inadequate school fencing, saying secure perimeters are a basic requirement for controlling access and improving safety.
