The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and Kingston Wharves have teamed up for the second consecutive year to host a summer cricket camp aimed at developing young cricketers while strengthening key values such as discipline, focus and resilience.
The two-week camp officially opened last Friday at Manley Horne Park in Junction, St Elizabeth, where the JDF has set up tents to accommodate soldiers supporting the programme.
This year’s camp will cater to 100 young cricketers between the ages of seven and 14, an increase from the 60 youngsters who participated in last year’s staging at Up Park Camp in Kingston.
Captain Marlon Saunders said more than 20 soldiers will be involved in delivering the programme, which will include cricket training, mentorship sessions and activities designed to develop leadership and personal discipline.
Members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), professional cricketers and JDF personnel will also participate in the mentorship sessions. A health fair will be held for residents in surrounding communities, while the JDF will use the opportunity to conduct a recruitment drive in western Jamaica.
Saunders said the decision to stage the camp in St Elizabeth was influenced by the significant impact of Hurricane Melissa on communities in western Jamaica.
He said the theme of this year’s camp is “resilience”, with the programme designed to teach the youngsters how to overcome setbacks, rebuild and emerge stronger.
Cricket coach Junior Bennett welcomed the partnership, saying the two weeks will provide an opportunity to significantly improve the youngsters’ skills while reinforcing discipline.
The young cricketers, who range in age from seven to 14, have participated in the Kingston Wharves cricket competition for several years.
Former Kingston Wharves Under-15 scholarship recipient Marquino Mindley will assist Bennett with the cricket training. Mindley received the scholarship in 2009 after participating in the competition.
Kingston Wharves Corporate Services Manager Simone Murdock said discipline remains an important component of the company’s youth development programme.
She said the partnership with the JDF has strengthened the camp by combining sporting development with character building.
The camp is scheduled to conclude on August 28 with closing activities showcasing some of the skills and lessons participants gained during the intensive sessions
