More than 130 oral health activities are planned across Jamaica this October as the Ministry of Health and Wellness urges residents to make caring for their teeth and gums a daily priority.
The activities form part of Oral Health Month, being observed under the theme “A happy mouth is a happy life”, which highlights the connection between oral health and overall well-being.
Dental screenings, oral health education, preventive care and fluoride treatments will be offered throughout the month. The outreach will target children, pregnant women, older adults, people with special needs and the wider public.
Children will receive particular attention through programmes in schools and early-childhood institutions, aimed at helping them develop good oral hygiene habits from an early age.
Community activities will also give residents opportunities to access dental services and information closer to home.
The observance builds on existing ministry programmes, including the School-based Oral Health Programme, the Second Chance Smiles Initiative, Community Dental Outreach Clinics and the “Watch Your Mouth” public education campaign.
The ministry is reminding Jamaicans that prevention begins at home. It recommends brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth, limiting sugary foods and drinks, and visiting the dentist regularly.
Residents are also being encouraged to seek care when oral health problems arise.
