KINGSTON, Jamaica — Panic gripped the Corporate Area Traffic Court on Melbourne Road Tuesday after a man reportedly entered the parking lot and discharged a firearm, sending customers scrambling for cover.
Sources indicate that the incident unfolded when a man ran onto the court compound, reportedly drew a gun, and fired several shots at a woman. The intended target managed to escape into the courthouse building in an attempt to seek safety.
The shooter is said to have fled the scene in a motor vehicle before law enforcement officers arrived. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Information reaching our news team suggests the shooting may be connected to ongoing disputes involving the alleged collection of extortion fees for parking in the vicinity. However, investigations are continuing.
Following the gunfire, court proceedings were reportedly adjourned. In a statement issued afterward, the Court Administration Division (CAD) confirmed that night court sessions at the facility have been suspended for the remainder of the week.
At the time of the incident, there was reportedly no formal security presence stationed outside the courthouse, apart from a watchman. It is further understood that several judges, the majority of whom are women, have since voiced concerns regarding safety at the location.
