St James Municipal Corporation Waives $4.5M in Craft Vendors’ Rent Arrears

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica — Hundreds of craft vendors in Montego Bay are set to benefit from a multimillion-dollar debt relief measure approved by the St James Municipal Corporation.

The decision will see approximately $4.5 million — half of the $9.3 million owed in outstanding rent — written off for 410 craft traders. The relief applies specifically to arrears accumulated during October and November 2025.

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, confirmed that the move followed appeals from vendors who reported significant financial hardship.

According to the mayor, craft market operators experienced business losses totaling $22 million during 2025, prompting the municipality to intervene with the partial waiver.

The corporation says the measure is intended to provide support to traders as they work toward stabilizing their operations.
