The Accountant General’s Department (AGD) is urging government pensioners and their families to submit quarterly life certificates on time to avoid any interruption in pension payments.
The appeal comes as the AGD continues its islandwide Life Certificate Drive, an initiative designed to bring the service directly to communities and make it easier for pensioners to meet the quarterly submission requirement.
Director of Communications at the AGD, Ricardo Brooks, said compliance is essential to ensuring pension payments are processed without delays.
“We don’t want any pensioner to face any delay or disruption in their pension payment. The life certificate is crucial to that process,” Brooks said.
He also encouraged relatives, neighbours and caregivers to remind pensioners of the submission deadlines, noting that timely submission helps ensure payments are made without interruption.
As part of the outreach programme, pensioners can submit or print their life certificates at designated community locations, where Justices of the Peace are available to certify the documents.
Life certificates must be submitted four times each year by January 31, April 30, July 31 and October 31. The documents verify that pensioners are still alive and remain eligible to receive their benefits.
To improve accessibility, the AGD has also installed life certificate drop boxes at several parish libraries, as well as at the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service and the AGD head office in Kingston.
According to Brooks, the partnership with the Jamaica Library Service was a natural choice, as libraries serve as central hubs within many communities. The additional drop boxes have become especially important following disruptions caused by Hurricane Melissa, which affected the operations of some post offices traditionally used for submitting life certificates.
The AGD says more drop boxes will be introduced across the island as part of efforts to make the submission process more convenient.
The Life Certificate Drive continues in Manchester on Thursday, July 9; St. Elizabeth on Friday, July 10; and Portmore on Saturday, July 11.
