Yohan Blake, ‘Bibi’ Gardner Among Sport Icons To Receive National Honours This October

Sprint sensation Yohan Blake and football legend Ricardo “Bibi” Gardner are among a distinguished group of Jamaicans set to receive National Honours and Awards on Heroes’ Day, October 20, 2025.

Blake, the 2011 World 100m Champion and the second fastest man in history over both the 100 and 200 metres, will be appointed to the Order of Distinction (Commander Class)—one of the nation’s highest honours. Known globally as “The Beast,” Blake’s legacy remains firmly etched in track and field history.

Gardner, a key member of Jamaica’s 1998 FIFA World Cup squad, will be conferred with the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) for his enduring impact on local and international football. Nicknamed “Bibi,” his long career at Bolton Wanderers and role in Jamaican football development make him a national treasure.

• Rovman Powell, former West Indies T20 captain – Order of Distinction (Officer Class)
• Dr. Michelle Holt, veteran team manager and medical contributor to national sports – Order of Distinction (Officer Class)
• Shane Ellis, celebrated jockey – Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service
• Nicholas Forde, recognized for national service and volunteerism in public service, physiotherapy, and sports – Badge of Honour

The annual ceremony continues to highlight excellence across various sectors, and this year’s list reflects Jamaica’s rich legacy in sports and community service.
