Montego Bay, St. James – Detectives assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) have arrested and charged two individuals in connection with the seizure of ammunition at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay on Friday, August 1.
Charged with Unauthorized Possession of Ammunition are:
- Brian Witter, 29, a security guard from Nain district, St. Elizabeth
- Vancia Peart, 46, of Pepper district, St. Elizabeth and the United States of America
According to police reports, around 11:30 a.m., Peart was preparing to board a flight to the U.S. when she was subjected to routine security screening. During the process, seven rounds of ammunition were discovered in her checked luggage.
Subsequent investigations by FNID detectives led to the arrest of Brian Witter. Both suspects were taken into custody and charged on Sunday, August 3.
So far in 2025, 139 rounds of ammunition and four firearms have been seized at Sangster International Airport, highlighting ongoing efforts to stem the movement of illegal weapons through Jamaica’s ports.
Acting Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Patrae Rowe, Director of FNID, issued a strong warning:
“Our airports are not just points of travel; they are critical lines of national defence. The movement of weapons poses a significant threat to public safety. We continue to strengthen security at our borders and urge all persons to comply with the laws of the land. Those who attempt to traffic firearms or ammunition will be held accountable.”
Neither Witter nor Peart were licensed or authorized to be in possession of ammunition.
