The Government is investing more than $9 billion in school nutrition to improve students’ access to healthier meals and support learning.
Education Minister Dr Dana Morris Dixon outlined the investment during a National School Nutrition Policy Certification Ceremony at Bartons Primary and Infant School in St Catherine on October 29. Part of the funding will help increase fresh produce supplies to schools.
Morris Dixon said addressing hunger and poor nutrition is essential to improving concentration and academic performance, beginning in early childhood.
Measures include providing breakfast at schools under the National School Learning and Intervention Plan, lowering sugar in Nutrition Products Limited offerings and using more locally grown ingredients. Papaya and cherry muffins, along with pumpkin jam, were highlighted as examples.
The minister also outlined plans for closer collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining to supply schools with more fruits and vegetables.
She encouraged schools to promote drinking water, establish gardens and support physical activity. Parents were urged to reinforce healthy eating at home.
Bartons Primary and Infant School was recognised for meeting certification requirements under the National School Nutrition Policy
