May Pen Hospital in Clarendon has received medical equipment valued at $21.9 million from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to improve care for premature and critically ill newborns.
The donation accompanied the opening of a neonatal isolation unit capable of accommodating up to eight babies who need specialised treatment and observation.
Equipment provided includes a neonatal ventilator, transport incubator, infusion pumps, patient monitors and suction machines. The contribution also covers air conditioning and medical gas infrastructure.
Hospital CEO Eugena Clarke-James said the improvements would strengthen neonatal services at the institution, which records approximately 2,000 to 2,500 deliveries annually.
State Minister for Health and Wellness Krystal Lee said the resources would improve respiratory support, monitoring and transfers between facilities.
Church representative Elder Luis Navarro highlighted the collaboration with the hospital and the Southern Regional Health Authority, crediting donations from church members worldwide for making the assistance possible.
