ST MARY, Jamaica — The education community in St Mary is mourning the loss of veteran educator Dottlyn Norma Dawes, who served for many years as principal of Carron Hall High School. Dawes died on January 3, 2026, following a period of illness.
The death of the retired principal was confirmed on Tuesday by the school’s current head, Carlinton Johnson, who shared the news via social media. In his tribute, Johnson highlighted Dawes’ lasting impact on the institution and the generations of students she guided during her tenure.
Dawes devoted more than three decades to Carron Hall High School, beginning her service in 1977 and retiring in 2013. She led the institution as principal from 1995 until her retirement. During that period, the school underwent a major transformation, shifting from its former status as Carron Hall Vocational School, an all-girls’ institution, to a co-educational high school.
In recognition of her contribution to education, Dawes was shortlisted as a finalist for the Lasco/Jamaica Teachers’ Association Teacher of the Year Award in 2002. Beyond the classroom, she also served the wider community as a justice of the peace in St Mary.
Since the announcement of her passing, former students, colleagues, and community members have shared messages of condolence and remembrance online, praising her leadership, encouragement, and belief in young people. Many credited Dawes with shaping their personal and professional lives through her guidance and example.
Dawes is being remembered as a dedicated educator whose influence extended well beyond the walls of Carron Hall High School.
