Four individuals are in custody following the seizure of a large shipment of marijuana during a maritime operation carried out by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coast Guard off the coast of Manchester on Tuesday.
According to the JDF, the operation resulted in the confiscation of more than 2,286.75 pounds of ganja, with an estimated street value of about $45 million.
Military officials reported that the vessel was intercepted in waters southwest of Long Bay Beach in Manchester after being detected during routine coastal patrols.
Members of the JDF Coast Guard’s First and Second District units were monitoring Jamaica’s southern coastline when they observed a suspicious boat near the Farquhar’s Beach area in Clarendon. The sighting prompted a coordinated pursuit by the patrol teams.
The operation ended with the successful interception of the vessel, authorities said.
A subsequent search of the boat uncovered 38 knitted bags containing compressed marijuana along with several 200-gallon fuel drums.
The four individuals aboard the vessel were detained in connection with the seizure.
Both the suspects and the confiscated drugs were later handed over to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division for further processing and investigation.
