Kingston, Jamaica – A British man and woman were arrested at Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday after authorities discovered they were attempting to smuggle cocaine worth $92.7 million.
The arrests were made by the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) during a routine security check for passengers boarding a British Airways flight to London. According to reports, around 4:25 p.m., officers became suspicious of the man’s behavior, prompting a search of his luggage. The inspection revealed seven kilograms (15 pounds) of cocaine concealed in the lining of two suitcases.
During the same screening process, the woman also raised suspicions, leading to a thorough search of her luggage. Officers uncovered approximately 7.2 kilograms (16 pounds) of cocaine hidden in her suitcases.
The combined street value of the seized drugs is estimated at £454,400 (J$92.7 million). Both individuals were immediately taken into custody and are currently being processed as investigations continue. Their identities have not been released.
This marks the first major cocaine seizure at NMIA since the start of the year, underscoring ongoing efforts by Jamaican authorities to clamp down on drug trafficking through the island’s airports.
