St Catherine, Jamaica – A St Catherine-based pastor has pleaded guilty to child abuse and cruelty to a child after violently assaulting his seven-year-old stepson at the child’s school in February.
The boy’s mother, who failed to report the incident, also pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting child abuse.
The court heard that the pastor went to the child’s school, grabbed him, and repeatedly punched him in the upper body in full view of shocked teachers. Authorities were alerted, and the matter was referred to the police’s Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse, which launched an investigation.
The pastor was later arrested at his church while delivering a sermon. The mother was also charged after investigators determined she was aware of the abuse but did nothing to stop it.
Both individuals had made several court appearances before pleading guilty on March 13. Their bails were extended by Acting Senior Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gayle until May 12, when they are scheduled to be sentenced.
