Tre’ Johnson, a former standout offensive lineman in the National Football League, has died unexpectedly at the age of 54, his family confirmed on Sunday.
Johnson passed away on February 15, 2026, while on a family vacation. In a statement shared by his wife, Irene, the family described his death as “sudden and unexpected,” and said they are “devastated and in shock.”
The former Washington franchise lineman — who spent the bulk of his nine-year NFL career with the team now known as the Washington Commanders — earned Pro Bowl honours in 1999 and also had a brief tenure with the Cleveland Browns.
After retiring from professional football, Johnson transitioned to education, serving as a history teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. He had recently taken a leave of absence from his teaching duties for health reasons.
Tributes have poured in from former teammates, colleagues and fans, with the Commanders organisation extending condolences to his family. Johnson is survived by his wife and their four children.
Further details surrounding the circumstances of his death have not been released. Authorities and family representatives have not indicated any suspicious factors at this time.
