A man accused of impregnating his 14-year-old daughter has been arrested in Mexico, where authorities also rescued the teenager, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.
Sergio Galvez Perez and his daughter were located during an operation involving Mexican authorities and the FBI.
Investigators believe the teenager gave birth to her father’s child beside a California road. The newborn, named “Baby Angelita” by law enforcement, was found dead on August 1.
Authorities had initially sought Perez and the teenager in connection with the infant’s death. However, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office says no charges have been filed against the girl, whom prosecutors describe as a victim of her father’s alleged abuse.
The office said the teenager’s safety remains its priority.
Perez is suspected of multiple felony offences, including incest, sexual offences involving a minor, child concealment and child endangerment.
Officials also reported that narcotics were found in his possession, but further details were not provided.
The sheriff’s office says a press conference will be scheduled.
