An 88-year-old woman who was reported missing for nearly two weeks has been found dead in the basement of her Chicago home, and her son has been charged in connection with her death.
The deceased has been identified as Daniest Graves, a resident of Chicago’s Roseland neighbourhood.
According to Chicago police, Graves’ body was discovered wrapped in a sheet and rug in the basement of her home on South Lafayette Avenue. Investigators said her 66-year-old son, Kevan Works, had been staying at the residence on and off in recent months.
Works has since been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and concealing a death.
The investigation began after Graves was reported missing. Concern intensified when her grey 2021 Ford Eco was found abandoned on Chicago’s West Side.
Relatives said they were stunned by the discovery. Graves’ son, Michael Works, who is also the suspect’s brother, said the family struggled to believe their mother could have been harmed by one of her own children.
Meanwhile, Kevan Works’ son, McNemon Vincent, said the family first realised something was wrong when Graves stopped sending her daily inspirational text messages, something he described as completely out of character.
Family members remembered Graves as a kind and devoted woman who remained active well into her later years. They said she earned a college degree in her 80s, attended church faithfully, and had recently taken on a part-time job to keep herself busy.
Police have not disclosed a motive for the alleged killing. The investigation remains ongoing while Works awaits further court proceedings.
