A 42-year-old Detroit man has pleaded guilty to the killing of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris, who disappeared in January 2024, according to prosecutors.
The accused, Jarvis Butts, also admitted to multiple sexual offences involving children. Authorities say Harris was last seen after getting off her school bus on the city’s east side and was never reported seen again.
Investigators revealed that Butts confessed to disposing of the teen’s body in the Rouge River after learning she was pregnant. Phone data reportedly placed him in the vicinity of the river around the time of her disappearance. During subsequent searches, police recovered clothing belonging to Harris along with signs indicating a struggle.
Prosecutors stated that Butts had been in a relationship with the teen’s aunt and had fathered several children with her. They allege he used that connection to gain access to the 13-year-old.
Under a plea agreement, Butts faces a sentence ranging from 35 to 60 years for second-degree murder. He will also be sentenced on four counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, with those terms to run concurrently.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 12 in the Wayne County Circuit Court.
