Shreveport, Louisiana — Eight children were killed and two women seriously injured in a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, in what authorities are investigating as a domestic violence-related attack.
Police said the shooting occurred at a residence in the city, where officers responding to reports of gunfire discovered multiple victims. According to preliminary information, seven of the children were believed to be related to the suspected gunman.
Authorities identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins. Following the shooting, police said the suspect fled the scene, prompting a pursuit that ended when officers fatally shot him.
The children killed ranged in age from approximately 1 to 14 years old, according to early reports. The two injured women were transported to a hospital in serious condition.
Law enforcement officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators are working to determine the events leading up to the shooting and have not yet released a possible motive beyond describing the case as domestic violence-related.
The shooting has shocked the local community and drawn national attention as one of the deadliest family-related mass killings in recent U.S. history.
