Kingston, Jamaica — A 33-year-old man identified as Gavin Hurd, an escapee from the Highgate Police Lockup in St. Mary, was fatally shot by police in a confrontation on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at 71 Rosalie Avenue, Kingston 11.
Authorities say a police team acting on intelligence that armed suspects were at the Rosalie Avenue address arrived at the scene, where they encountered Hurd. According to reports, Hurd allegedly brandished a firearm and pointed it at officers, prompting them to discharge their weapons in self-defense. Hurd was struck in the upper body.
Police recovered a 9-millimeter pistol with seven live rounds at the scene. Hurd was rushed to Kingston Public Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Hurd, also known by the nickname “Bones,” had escaped from custody in 2023 and reportedly came under police surveillance in 2024 due to suspected involvement in criminal activities. Intelligence indicated that he was hiding in the Waterhouse area and was being sheltered by a member of the Yacca Avenue gang on Rosalie Avenue, where he allegedly assisted in car theft operations.
- As of May 22, 2025, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) reports that security forces in Jamaica have been involved in 134 fatal shootings, marking a substantial increase from previous years.
Authorities continue to emphasize their commitment to tackling armed crime and gang-related violence in the region.
