ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — A Clarendon woman who threatened police in a viral social media video following the death of reputed gang leader Othneil ‘Thickman’ Lobban has been fined $900,000 or face four months in prison.
The sentence was handed down on Thursday in the St Catherine Parish Court by Judge Geneta Smikle, who ruled that a custodial sentence was not necessary, citing the woman’s status as a first-time offender and referencing Section 3(1) of the Criminal Justice (Administration) Act.
“I am going to fine you, as this will give you time to reflect on your behaviour,” the judge said.
The woman, 23-year-old Dhana Warren, had previously pleaded guilty to malicious communication on April 24. Her attorney, Rodain Richardson, argued that she had been under the influence of alcohol at the time and had no prior convictions. He also noted that she had already spent several months in custody.
The case stems from a video Warren posted on January 23, in which she made threats against the police shortly after Lobban’s death in an alleged confrontation with law enforcement. Following an investigation, she was arrested in May Pen, Clarendon, and later charged after a formal interview. A psychiatric evaluation was also ordered during court proceedings
