An Alabama high school basketball coach facing multiple sex-related charges is seeking to have the case dismissed, arguing that the alleged victim was legally an adult and not a student at the school where she worked.
Paige Adams, 35, who previously coached at Cold Springs High School in Alabama, was charged in April with 30 offences linked to alleged sexual conduct and communication involving an 18-year-old male student. The case has drawn widespread attention due to Adams’ role in leading the school’s basketball team to a state championship before her resignation.
Court filings submitted by Adams’ attorneys claim the alleged victim did not attend Cold Springs High School and was never under her educational supervision or extracurricular authority. The defence argues this undermines the basis of the charges brought against her.
According to investigators, Adams allegedly exchanged obscene material with the teenager on at least 28 occasions between February 13 and March 9. Prosecutors also allege that on March 16, shortly before she stepped down from her position, she requested sexual material from the student.
The Alabama basketball coach sex charges remain before the court as Adams’ legal team pushes for the indictment to be thrown out.
Reports indicate the controversy also affected Adams’ personal life, with her husband filing for divorce after the allegations surfaced publicly in April.
The matter continues to develop in the Alabama court system.
