A St Catherine daycare operator accused in a disturbing baby bite-mark case was freed in court on Tuesday after mediation resulted in a financial settlement and an apology to the child’s mother.
The 48-year-old woman, who had been charged with child neglect and cruelty, was discharged in the St Catherine Parish Court following an agreement reached between both parties.
The matter arose from an incident reported on April 21, when a mother allegedly discovered bite marks on her 10-month-old child while bathing the infant after collection from the daycare facility.
Following the discovery, the woman reportedly contacted the Spanish Town Police and a formal investigation was launched into the incident.
During mediation, the child’s mother agreed to settle the case after receiving an apology and a payment of $50,000.
Although the criminal matter has been resolved, the court ordered investigators to determine whether the St Catherine daycare centre is operating in compliance with the required licensing regulations.
The outcome of the St Catherine daycare case has renewed attention on childcare standards and oversight within early childhood institutions across the parish.
