A 24-year-old Chinese businessman was found dead inside his supermarket after fire destroyed the premises in Port Maria, St Mary, on Saturday.
He has been identified as Li Kanghin, one of the operators of Ling Fei Supermarket and Wholesale on Stennett Street.
According to police, Kanghin was inside the building, where he also resided, when employees reported hearing an explosion around 1:40 pm. They then noticed flames coming from a section of the property.
Police and firefighters from the Port Maria Fire Brigade responded. Crews spent several hours battling the blaze before bringing it under control.
Kanghin’s body was found inside the gutted building during cooling-down operations.
Police also addressed claims circulating on social media that a firefighter had become trapped inside the supermarket, saying they had received no such report.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. Investigations are continuing.
